Carved from a large pebble<br/> the vessel is in the form of a recumbent phoenix<br/> grasping in its beak a lingzhi branch<br/> the backward-turned neck and head of the bird are well carved in high relief and openwork<br/> the closed wings detailed with feathers and project from the body above the curled tail feathers and feet carved in low relief. The back is centred by a small circular aperture fitted with a recumbent phoenix-form finial. The stone is of an attractive semi-translucent white tone with milky speckling and small areas of russet inclusion.
