In 1732, J.-Z. Holwell (1711-1778), son of an Irish trader, went to Bengal, where he served first as a surgeon and then in the administration, before becoming its governor for a year (1759-60). He had learned Hindustani and the various idioms used in the Indies. His work is both a history of Hindustan and the provinces of Bengal and a presentation of the dogmas of the Gentous. He was the first European to study Indian antiquities. His ignorance of Sanskrit caused him to make many errors, but he nonetheless has the merit of having opened the way for later studies.
Used binding, tear on the board.
