Early Portsmouth, NH Painted Leather Fire Bucket, marked "Lewis Barnes, No. 1, Federal F.S. (Federal Fire Society), 1789", with a painted burning tree, the back with fourteen alternating red, ochre and black stripes, Lewis Barnes (1776-1856) was a Portsmouth merchant and sea captain who joined the Portsmouth Federal Fire Society in 1810, 12" high, 9" diam. The Federal Fire Society was founded in 1789 as a fraternal fire fighting organization created to protect the property and valued possessions of its members. At the sound of an alarm, members were required to respond quickly and bring with them two buckets and two large bags (used to collect valuables removed from the burning building which would be guarded by the organization"s members). This group continued to fight fires until the Civil War period when professional fire departments took over. Of the six original fraternal fire groups in Portsmouth, only two, including the Federal Fire Society, are still active today as social clubs.
