Description

The copper-alloy rectangular box with rounded corners, slightly convex overlapping lid, the outside of the lid decorated in relief, slight gilding, and enamels with a Rinpa-style depiction of Mount Fuji, clouds, and a pine-clad shore, the interior covered in lacquer-soaked cloth flecked with gold leaf, containing a fitted hardwood board with a brush-rest and recesses for a partially lacquered suzuri (ink stone) and a copper-alloy suiteki (water-dropper) decorated in enamels with chidori (plovers or dotterels) above drying fishing nets; containing a brochure and postcard of the Ando Company, both datable to 1937; with a wood storage box.
