Description

The first bottle is carved through the opaque deep cinnabar-red overlay on one side with a cat and a butterfly beside a blossoming peony on a rootwood stand, the reverse with three long-tailed birds and two bats surrounding a bird swooping around a blossoming prunus, and with mask-and-ring handles on the narrow sides. The second bottle is carved through the pale brown overlay in low relief on one side with a long-tailed bird perched on a gnarled branch above rockwork surrounded by bats, the reverse with a sampan, a pavilion and trees, with an inscription above which reads, fang Nantian zuo ('made after [the painting style of] Nantian [Yun Shouping]'), and the narrow sides with mask-and-ring handles.
