In French. 185 pages, 265 x 178mm with a 14 page manuscript bound in the center (title page torn, typical marginal wear throughout). String bound with wraps repurposed from several pages of a French genealogical directory.
An unpublished journal maintained by an anonymous French naval officer under the command of Louis Antoine de Bourganville, chronicling the campaigns of 1781 and 1782 detailing the movements of the 80-gun ship of the line, Auguste , including a detailed account of the Battle of the Chesapeake, the siege of Yorktown, Cornwallis" surrender, including a transcript in French of the terms of capitulation on 19 October 1781, as well as transcriptions of Washington"s letter of congratulations to Rochambeau, an account of a post-surrender dinner with Washington, Cornwallis and De Grasse , as well as a detailed narration of the epic Battle of the Saints in 1782. Additionally, the journal details the names of the ships that made up the squadron that departed Brest in March 1781 as well as lists of officers who served during the Battle of the Chesapeake, Siege of Yorktown, "l"affiare at St. Christophe," the Battle of the Saintes, as well as descriptions of Martinique, St. Lucia, and St. Domingue.
