Finely carved in two halves exactly fitted together and bound with superbly braided flax binding, the front sound hole with a delicately carved wheku face with paua shell-inlaid eyes.
"An instrument unique to Maori culture was the putorino , sometimes regarded as a trumpet and sometimes as a flute. The playing method is in doubt, partly because putorino became obsolete very soon after European contact. Despite their limitations as an instrument, they were very highly valued, if we are to judge by the amount of refined carving often invested in their decoration."
