With collecting, there are a few mentors who opened up my mind and my eye to the universal truths in art and design. Axel Vervoordt has a taste and an ability to make choices in his collecting that distill the best of humankind across millennia and across all media. Indirectly through my own observations, Axel taught me to open my mind and my eyes to the stories that objects contain. Patina and wear that an object has acquired over time can be deciphered and perceived as a story--a spiritual endeavor. When you are open to what something has to say, you can tap into a sustained lifeforce of the history and experience an object has physically absorbed over the course of its existence. This can be true of the simplest box or the most sublime 15th century Buddha, if one simply allows themselves to be open, these works of art will connect you to their maker, and to another time and place, confirming the miracle of existence. Even on a budget, a simple box from the 1700s with a hand-wrought clasp and worm wood can express these profound characteristics.-Michael Jefferson
Good condition. Box has worming, losses, chips, and cracks throughout. Finish loss and darkening throughout.
